Pan’s Labyrinth: The Labyrinth of the Faun by Guillermo del Toro and Cornelia Funke
A dark fantasy novel for the young adults (and adults) on your shopping list. When young Ofelia and her pregnant mother move to a remote forest in Spain to be with her cruel and sadistic stepfather, she is introduced to a fairy-tale world with a mythical labyrinth, a mysterious faun, and a series of daunting tasks. A creepy and atmospheric read complete with beautiful illustrations and dark fairy-tale vignettes.

Since the night she inexplicably shot her fashion photographer husband to death, Alicia, a famous artist, has not spoken a word. Can psychotherapist Theo finally get her to speak, or will he put himself in danger trying to uncover the truth? A shocking and twisty thriller novel that will keep readers guessing until the end.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Illustrated Edition by J.K Rowling, Illustrated by Jim Kay
The perfect gift for your favourite Potterhead! Jim Kay’s beautiful illustrations bring Rowling’s magical story to life. Harry is back for his fourth year at Hogwarts. When he is mysteriously selected by the Goblet of Fire to compete in the Triwizard Tournament, he must face dangerous challenges, dragons, and possibly a certain Dark Lord…

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood
The feminists on your shopping list (and fans of Margaret Atwood inspired TV) will love The Testaments, the long-awaited sequel to Atwood’s dystopian classic, The Handmaid’s Tale. Set 15 years after the original, the book is narrated by Aunt Lydia, a terrifying character familiar to readers; Agnes, a young girl who grew up in Gilead; and Daisy, a teen who lives in Canada. Their lives become intertwined in this tense and entertaining page turner.

Normal People by Sally Rooney
A love (ish) story for people who don’t like typical love stories. Connell, a popular jock, and Marianne, a loner, spark an intense and unconventional relationship in high school, and continue to be drawn together as they navigate college, adulthood, and their own personal issues. A realistic portrayal of friendship, social class, attraction, and misunderstanding.

The Whisper Man by Alex North
In this creepy and unsettling novel, Tom and his son Jake move to a small town for a fresh start. Years ago, a serial killer named The Whisper Man abducted and killed five young boys, but nothing has happened since he was caught. But one night, Jake begins to hear whispering through his window. Will Tom be able to keep him safe? A great novel for the horror lover on your list.

Into the Planet by Jill Heinerth
Perfect for the non-fiction fan on your shopping list. Heinerth – a world-renowned cave diver and the first person to dive INTO an Antarctic iceberg – shares stories of her travels, exploring the depths of the world, and split-second decisions that can be the difference between life and death. I haven’t had a chance to read this book yet, but it is high up on my TBR for next year.

Christmas Days by Jeanette Winterson
If you have a friend that can’t get enough of Christmas, buy them a Christmas Book! I read Christmas Days last year, and it quickly became one of my all-time favourite Christmas reads. A collection of 12 unique and original stories (one for each of the 12 days of Christmas), each with a delicious recipe to accompany it.
